The Flaming Ice Cube on Public Square Downtown Cleveland

Well, two weeks is almost up, which will mark the end of my Vegan trial. I must admit, it has not been all that difficult especially with places like The Flaming Ice Cube on Public Square in downtown Cleveland.

This type of restaurant takes a lot of the thinking out of the decision making process when sitting down to eat. I made the mistake of asking if a couple things were Vegan only to get a confirmation that “again, everything here is vegan so you don’t need to ask.” I guess that’s great, the food was amazing, vegan burger with vegan mayo and vegan moz, a side of vegan potato salad and vegan cream in my coffee. All were really really good, my wife’s burrito wasn’t bad either.

My only question, and this will continue to to puzzle me moving forward as I decide to what degree my diet will be vegan in my everyday life. If the food is vegan but it is obviously processed in some way, i.e. the mayo or cheese, is that any better for you? Should we in fact just say goodbye to those items all together whether they have dairy in them or not and just focus on “fresh and local?” A question perhaps that I will continue to debate moving forward.

Bottom line The Flaming Ice Cube presents a wonderful option for the vegetarian vegan or just your average lover of good cuisine, I highly recommend it, Thanks Karen!

Garlic Festival in Shaker Square this Past Weekend

Wow, I must say I am really getting into the whole, locally grown, fresh produce, handmade bowl, organic sausage…. Thing.

I don’t know whether its that I’m in my thirties or my daughter being born but lately, the further things are away from being mass produced and the less distance they need to travel to get into my belly usually mean less stuff is added to them and therefore the are simply fresher and better.  Makes sense so why fight it.

I love it, I find myself more and more shopping organic, perusing the isle at co-ops and seeking out fresh markets with local fresh stuff.

This brings me to my point.  This past weekend I had the pleasure of taking my family to the Shaker Heights 2nd annual Garlic Festival.  You man or may not know but every Saturday, a farmers market is held in Shaker Square.  The whole street is blocked off and area farmers bring their jams and strawberries and honey and sausages and whatever else they have to sell and we get to enjoy it.  This weekend was that on steroids.  There were bands, beer, puppets dancing …the whole nine yards.

It was $7 a person to get in but after all,  it goes to support these farmers, and at the end of the day, I’m willing to shell out a little more if it means I can enjoy more of this kind of flavor from these type of folks.  See you next year!

Cleveland Orchestra puts on Free Concert at Public Square 9/11

9/11 is coming up and for most Americans and people all over the world, it is a very emotional day.  People choose to observe this day in various ways.

For many Clevelanders it marks the beginning of Brown’s Football.  For whatever reason the NFL has decided that the show must go so whether you think that’s right or not, it appears it is the way it is.

For an evening a little bit more cultured in which you can remember those who lost their lives on September 11th 10 years ago, the Cleveland orchestra is holding a free concert on Public Square.  All are welcome and it should be something truly amazing.  The orchestra has put on a free show every year since 1989 downtown but this year should be a bit more relevant.

Show starts at 2:30 and goes till 6:30, hope to see you there.

THE FEAST of the ASSUMPTION

If food, fun, music, gambling and a lot of people watching is what you’re into then Little Italy’s Feast of The Assumption just might be your cup-a-tea.  This is a throw back festival with a new school twist.  It is obviously a religious celebration but that kinda gets lost amongst all the chaos.  Be prepared for a carnival like atmosphere.

The area of Mayfield Road that runs through Little Italy get shut down as local restaurants set up booths along the street.  If you haven’t sampled any of Little Italy’s many fine restaurants, this would be an opportunity to sample them all.  There is gambling (for charity) in the basement of the church and dancing on the bar patios.  All in all its a great time for the whole family so go check it out, starts Friday the 12th and runs through Monday the 15th.

Will I see you at the Taste of Tremont Tomorrow?

One of the most fun and delicious events all year is the Taste of Tremont.  This year it is being held tomorrow, July 17th 12-8pm.  Its going to be a scorcher so dress accordingly and make sure you bring your sun screen.

Tremont stands out as one of the leading Cleveland neighborhoods when it comes to fantastic cuisine.  Restaurants such as Micheal Simon’s Lolita and the newer Dante make this area a destination for people looking for something special when dining out.

What is so special about this event is that only local businesses are allowed to have booths.  The event itself is free you simply pay as one booth or another catches your eye or nose and you feel like trying some of their delectables.

Should be a lot of fun, hope to see you there!
